United States (US) Democratic Senator Ed Markey, who was banned recently from entering the Philippines recently by the Duterte Administration for sponsoring a Senate Resolution condemning the incarceration of Philippine Senator Leila De Lima and calling for her immediate release, has issued a statement on the issue.
His statement read, “President Duterte is sorely mistaken if he thinks he can silence my voice and that of my colleagues. He has already failed to silence Senator De Lima, Maria Ressa, and others in his country who have spoken truth to power.”
“I stand with the people of the Philippines and with my state’s vibrant Filipino-American community in fighting for the highest democratic ideals and against the strongman tactics of the Duterte government.”
The US is also sanctioning individuals who are responsible for De Lima’s jailing, so expect more “Fireworks” between the Philippines and the US to occur once the US releases the list of those individuals that will be sanctioned.
