AFP Modernization Bits and Pieces – Dec. 14, 2019

Some bits and pieces news about the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have come up, and first of these is how the Philippine Army (PA) will be receiving various equipment and weapons from (of all things) the United States Navy (USN) thru their Navy International Programs Office (NIPO).

These are as follows, although no specific models were mentioned:
- Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)
- Night Vision Devices (NVD)
- Communications Equipment
- Small Arms

Also interestingly mentioned is the proposed Joint Inspection in 2020 (not mentioned in the article where, but most likely in the US) between the PA and NIPO for:
- Beechcraft TC-12 (the article misspelled it as “Beach Craft”)
- Whiskey Helicopter

The Beechcraft TC-12B is called the “Huron” and was operated by the USN as a Trainer, although they were officially retired in 2017.

A Google search for “Whiskey Helicopter” turned up the HH-60W Helicopter of the United States Air Force (USAF), but I think it is likely to be none other than the AH-1W “Whiskey” Super Cobra Attack Helicopter of the United States Marine Corps (USMC).

If so, remember that this is the PA and not the Philippine Air Force (PAF), hence it seems that the PA is interested in getting Attack Helicopters of their own, which would be for their newly activated Aviation Regiment.

The PA is also interested in acquiring Light Attack Helicopters, Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters and Multi-Purpose Lift Helicopters.
