Philippine Air Force Modernization Bits and Pieces – Jan. 16, 2020

Just some new bits and pieces of the Philippine Air Force’s (PAF) Modernization Program during their Change of Command Ceremony for the PAF Chief last January 16, 2020. Most of the good stuff start from around the 47 minute mark of the video:

* Delivery of the Hermes 450 and Hermes 900 Drones has started.

* “Seven Ground Based Air Defense Missile Systems”, no mention if these are Batteries or units, I assume this means units.

* Four Air Surveillance Radar Systems are waiting for the issuance of the Notice of Award

* Incoming PAF Chief said “PAF at the threshold of selecting its Multi-Role Fighter (MRF)” while outgoing PAF Chief said that the PAF will “finalize decision soon for the MRF”.

* The two ELM-2288 AD-STAR radars had 100% Performance Rating logging 8,000 hours of monitoring Philippine airspace

With all this tension going around between the Philippines and the United States (US) on the issue of Senator Leila De Lima and Human Rights, if they haven’t done it already then the PAF should come up with a ranked list of choices for their MRF Program so if a roadblock comes across one aircraft due to the US’ policies, then they can move on relatively quickly down the list.

And that list should include aircraft that are not covered by the US’ International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) Law which will keep them from exporting the aircraft, or issuing an Export License for a component of the aircraft.
