Missile similar to the one used by the Chinese Naval Vessel that encountered the BRP Yap destroyed an Iranian Navy Ship recently

A copy of the missile that is part of the family of missiles that the YJ-83 Anti-Ship Missile (AShM) belongs to destroyed an Iranian Naval Ship recently. The YJ-83 is used by the Liupanshui (514) vessel that had an incident with the BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39) Corvette at Commodore (or Rizal) Reef in February 2020.

The Moudge class Frigate Jamaran accidentally fired its C-802 Noor missile and hit the Hendijan-class Support Vessel Konarak which was still laying out the targets for a Training Exercise. Both vessels belong to the Iranian Navy. 19 Sailors were killed and 15 more were wounded in the incident.

The C-802 Noor is an unlicensed built version by Iran of the C-802 which is closely related to the YJ-83 missile. The Konarak Vessel is around 50 m long and weighs 650 tons, and from the pictures and videos we can see that its entire Superstructure was destroyed or blown off by the Noor’s 165 kg warhead.

Note that the YJ-83’s warhead is even heavier than that of the Noor at 190 kg. The BRP Yap is much longer than the Konarak at 88 m and almost twice as heavy at 1,200 tons, but a single hit from a YJ-83 missile would do a lot of damage, and at least two hits would likely be catastrophic.

The Yap, even though it doesn’t have missiles of its own, is the most heavily armed vessel in the PN today. Of particular note is its two Twin Fast Forty cannons which its manufacturer Oto Melara claims can shoot down a supersonic missile flying in a straight line starting at 3 km away.

Along with its two 76 mm/62 Compact guns, I think it has a fair chance of defending itself against a missile attack.

The Liupanshui is a Type 056 Jiangdao class Corvette of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) while the BRP Yap is a former Pohang class Corvette of the South Korean Navy.
