Some updates on the Philippine Air Force’s (PAF) Modernization Program from the Inquirer:
* The 6 new A-29 Super Tucano Aircraft of the PAF will be used for Close Air Support (CAS) in Counter Insurgency Operations soon to complement the FA-50PH Fighting Eagle Aircraft. They will also do limited Reconnaissance Patrols in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
* The OV-10 Bronco Aircraft of the PAF are up for decommissioning.
* The Inquirer showed a picture of the AH-1 Cobra Attack Helicopters from Jordan with Launchers for the BGM-71 Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided (TOW) Missiles. The Cobra Helicopters will also soon be ready for combat.
With its impending retirement from service, it seems that the 2017 Battle of Marawi is the Bronco’s last hurrah as it figured prominently in the battle, there are a couple of Videos on Youtube about it making multiple bombing runs there.
The Cobra now with its TOW Missile Launchers would be the second Helicopter in the current Inventory of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) publicly confirmed with Missile Capability, the first one being the AW-159 Wildcat Helicopters of the Philippine Navy (PN) which uses the Spike Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) Missiles.
