The "Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG)" recently released the 2024 Version of their "Chandler Good Governance Index (CGGI)" which ranks 113 Countries on how effective their Government is, and the Philippines' rank went down to its lowest in four Years, and the second worst Rank in South East Asia (SEA).
The Philippines ranked 67th overall in 2024, down from 63rd in 2023 under the Administration of President Bong Bong Marcos (PBBM). These are a big drop from 59th in 2022 and 58th in 2021 in rank under the Administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The Years 2023 and 2024 were also the Years that the Philippines ranked below 60th. The Years before that, the Philippines had ranked in the upper 50s. Note that the Index only started its rankings in 2021.
The Chandler Index ranks a Country based on seven different Areas, which are:
- Leadership and Foresight
- Robust Laws and Policies
- Strong Institutions
- Financial Stewardship
- Attractive Marketplace
- Global Influence and Reputation
- and Helping People Rise
And based on these, the Philippines got the worst ranking in “Leadership and Foresight” where it ranked 92nd compared to other Countries. The Report noted down that the Country is weakest in Terms of “Ethical Leadership” and “Innovation”.
On the other Hand, the Philippines got its best ranking in the Area of “Financial Stewardship” where it got a ranking of 46th.
In the SEA Region, the Philippines was only second worst with its overall Score of 67, ahead only of Cambodia which ranked 90th. Five other SEA Countries were ranked well ahead of the Philippines, starting with Thailand at 54th, Vietnam at 50th, Indonesia at 47th, Malaysia at 39th and Singapore at number one.
Four SEA Countries were not included in the List, namely Laos, Myanmar, Brunei and Timor-Leste. Vietnam got a special mention in the Report after improving its overall Score from 58th in the previous Years to 50th for this Year of 2024. Remember though that Vietnam is a Communist Country, one of the few remaining Communist Countries in the World like China.
