I got the Mig-29 Fighter Aircraft on the Metalstorm Game because of its slightly above average Turn Rate of 36 degrees per second and its six Missiles, thinking it would be a pretty good Dogfighter. When I finally got it, I was a little bit disappointed with it at first because its Controls are a little bit sluggish, definitely not as good as with light Fighters like the Mig-21.
This initially made me think that this was only a mediocre Aircraft, not much to distinguish it from other similar Aircraft in the Game. However, I started to realize that with its very high Optimal Turn Rate Speed (OTRS) of around 828 kph, it is able to close in on Enemy Aircraft pretty quickly, just like with the Mig-21.
Closing in on Enemy Aircraft means getting them into Gun Range even faster than the Mig-21 whose OTRS is much less at only 738 kph. That extra speed means I can make Gun Kill attempts faster even more. My Tactic with this Aircraft is to fire off a burst from my Cannons if the Enemy I think is not too far away, anticipating that the Gun Sight Lead Marker will show up soon as I close in on it, and they usually do.
And when it does, just continue firing at the Aircraft until either it gets destroyed, or until my Missile locks on to it so I can fire it off and finish the Aircraft. It’s great though if I kill the Aircraft only with my Guns because it means I can get to keep the Missile for another Kill attempt at another Aircraft.
This Way I won’t have to rearm as often, or get more kills before I need to rearm. The Mig-29’s Guns are more powerful than that of the Mig-21, and has medium Armor-Piercing Qualities, making kills with it a lot more likely. The Mig-29 also gives about the same exhilarating feeling of Speed when flying it like on the Mig-21, especially when flying close to the Terrain, but not as much because it is not as agile.
I also noticed that the Mig-29 is a bit more durable, and in combination with its high speed then it usually is able to survive a bit more punishment in Terms of Gunfire or Missiles.
One downside with this Aircraft though is that its medium-range Missiles are mediocre because you need to keep your Radar locked on the Enemy until it impacts, and you can only fire one such Missile at a time.
Another downside is that the Aircraft doesn’t keep the Turn Rate Indicator (TRI) on the Yellow during Turns very well unless you use the Afterburners which, of course, eventually runs out and you have to wait for it to recharge again. This is probably one disadvantage of having such a high OTRS.
It also doesn’t have as many Flares at only three, compared to other Aircraft which usually has around 4 to 5. Lastly, its high closing speed means you need to have quick Reflexes and Decision Making Abilities to optimize it, and this is especially true during Head On Encounters.
For me in these Situations, I just go to the Guns, and then Missiles later when it locks. Overall, despite some Drawbacks, I like flying the Mig-29, it is now one of my Favorite Aircraft to use, even ahead of the Mig-21.
In the first Match you are watching, I died twice but got ten Kills while in the second Match, I died only once and got nine Kills. Some Parts of the Matches were sped up to go thru faster the least interesting Parts and slowed down only to normal speed on the most interesting Parts.
