Russia’s Orsis gifted a T-5000 Sniper Rifle to Duterte

This picture is courtesy of Wikimedia Commons and is just an example of what a typical T-5000 rifle looks like, it is not the exact, same rifle that was given to Duterte.

The Russian Rifle manufacturer Orsis gifted a T-5000 Sniper Rifle to President Rodrigo Duterte during his State Visit to Russia last October 2019, and he reportedly really liked the rifle.

Also during the same State Visit, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana visited the Orsis factory in Russia and tested some of the rifles there.

Philippine Marines shown Russian Naval Infantry Demonstration, Training and Weapons in 2018

Late post, here is some news and pictures about how our Philippine Marines were were shown demonstrations of the capabilities, training and weapons of the Russian Naval Infantry, or their equivalent to our Philippine Marine Corps (PMC).

Our Marines even got to try shooting AK Rifles and get a close look at their BTR-82A Amphibious Armored Vehicle. See the link of the original article somewhere below, and I am reposting the English translation by Google Translate of this article directly below. I am also reposting pictures from the original article.

Marines of the Pacific Fleet showed the Sailors of the Philippines Navy an Episode of Landing on an unequipped Coast

Major General Dmitry Kovalenko, Deputy Commander of the Pacific Fleet for Coastal and Land Forces, told Captain 1st Rank Florente Narola Gagua, commander of the National Navy operational formation, about the history of the creation of the Marine Corps in the Pacific Ocean, the tasks of the Marines, and the principles of selection for service in the Marine Corps.

The episode was presented to the attention of the guests at the landfill with an amphibious assault landing on an unequipped coast during which the new BTR-82A simulated a float from a large landing ship and an approach to the coast. Filipino sailors were also shown how the marines, with the support of armored personnel carriers, using small arms and grenade launchers, engage in defensive combat, marines passing an obstacle course, and performing hand-to-hand combat.

The Filipinos were given the opportunity to test their strength on the obstacle course, and after instructing in safety measures, they trained in firing from standard models of small arms of marines.

During a visit to the training ground, guests were shown samples of modern military equipment that is in service with the Pacific Fleet coastal forces. Also, Filipino sailors tasted soldier's porridge and tea prepared here in the field kitchens.

Exchange of Military Personnel for Education and Wargames with Russia?

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana tackled two topics in terms of improving Military Ties with Russia, and the first is the exchange of personnel for Military Education. This means that we will be sending Military Cadets to Russia and at the same time their Military Cadets will be accommodated in the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

If this pushes thru, not sure but this could be the first time in the history of the PMA to officially host cadets from Russia. And it doesn’t just end with just the cadets, Military Officers themselves could be sent to Russia also to pursue higher Military Education.

Another topic is War Games with Russia, but Lorenzana said that a framework for a Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) needs to be setup first, and any such Military Exercise as per law needs to be approved by the Senate first.

These will be huge in terms of a Paradigm Shift for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) if they materialize. These developments is probably one reason why the United States (US) is intent on holding a Joint Military Exercise with the AFP almost every single day of the year in 2020.

Russian Rifles are also available in NATO Standard Ammunition

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana reacted to a recent news story where Russia announced that they are ready to put up a weapons hub in the Philippines by saying that the Philippines might not be ready for such an investment because Russian Rifles use a different caliber than the ones the Philippines is using.

I find this strange because Russian rifles are available in North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) standard ammunition also, especially the newer ones.

The AK-101 and AK-102 for example, are variants of the AK-47 rifle that are available in NATO 5.56 x 45 mm ammunition.

There are a couple of other examples of Russian rifles being available also in NATO standard caliber ammunition.

Not sure if the Defense Secretary is just unaware of this, but one reason could be that he is just wary about the American’s meddling Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) Law which seeks to sanction any military transaction with Russia.

Another could be that the Rifle manufacturer situation in the Philippines is a bit crowded already. I mean, we do have a number of local Rifle manufacturers who are tied up with other foreign companies, plus there are a lot of foreign companies out there who supply those rifles as well.

Maybe Russia could focus on higher end military products than just rifles, products that are not being manufactured yet in the Philippines like NATO standard cannon rounds, bombs, rockets, 40 mm Grenade rounds, Mortar rounds and most especially, missiles.

Russian Arms Export to South East Asia

This is an old article from November 2018 by the Nikkei Asian Review, but it is a must-read on the role of Russian Arms in South East Asia (SEA). Just to highlight some of the facts presented in the article:

* From 2010 to 2017, Russia exported Usd 6.64 billion worth of arms in SEA. The United States (US) in the same time period only exported Usd 4.58 billion in the region.

* Vietnam bought 78% of the share of Russian arms in SEA from 2000 to 2017. Next is Myanmar (11%), Indonesia (10%), and the remaining 1% shared by Thailand, Laos and Malaysia.

* Russia does not tie Arms Sales to a country’s Human Rights (HR) records.

* Indonesia was dependent on the US for weapons in the 1990s, but that changed when the US withheld Spare Parts and Munitions to Indonesia over Human Rights concerns in East Timor and Papua New Guinea.

* US-Vietnam relations are improving, but the author sees it is unlikely that Vietnam will be approved big ticket sales by the US Congress due to its poor Human Rights record.

Russia-Philippines Trade jumped 100% in 2019

The overall Trade (Exports and Imports) between Russia and the Philippines jumped 100% to Usd 1.2 billion in 2019 under the Duterte Administration.

Of course this is quite small when compared to our Trade with other countries like the United States (US), for example wherein our Trade with them is worth a total of Usd 18 billion.

But it is growing, and with President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit to Russia, expect more Trade opportunities to come up. More Trade means more Businesses, Jobs and Taxes are generated for more Filipinos.
