On Jay Sonza’s Post about Russian Flanker Aircraft for the Philippines

Media Personality Jay Sonza posted on his Facebook Account recently about Russian-made Flanker Aircraft for the Philippines (see above, you can access it here). The post has since gone Viral with over 5k Reactions and 200 Shares, and I would just like to post my thoughts about it.

First of all I am not sure if he is just expressing his opinion that the Philippines should get nine Flanker Aircraft, or is he relaying News that the Philippines is planning to get such Aircraft? If he I relaying News, then he did not reveal the Source of his News.

PAF MRF Program Updates – February 5, 2020

Just some updates on the Multi-Role Fighter (MRF) Program of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) from the Shepard Media Publication:

* The United States (US) is reportedly working with the Philippines on a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) deal for the F-16V Block 70 aircraft, with Lockheed Martin is promoting the with ground demonstrations while the US Department of Defense (DoD) is assisting with flight demonstrations.

* Either Saab or Shepard Media estimates that number of aircraft based on the budget allocation for the JAS-39C/D Gripen could be only around six to eight aircraft.

* The PAF’s MRF Technical Working Group (TWG) reportedly has evaluated the Gripen in Sweden and other Air Forces over the past few years as part of its evaluation process.

F-16V versus JAS-39C Poll - December 2019

The F-16V Viper decisively won over the JAS-39C Gripen in the Poll by this page as the personal choice of those who voted for the Philippine Air Force’s (PAF) Multi-Role Fighter (MRF) program. The Viper garnered 60% of the votes during the week-long Poll while the Gripen only got 40%.

F-16V Viper Production filled up until at least 2026

Lockheed Martin’s (LM) current production capacity for the F-16V Viper aircraft is already filled up to 2026.

This is based on LM’s that the maximum capacity of their Production Facility in Greenville, South Carolina for the F-16V is four aircraft per month or 48 per year.

Now with a firm order (those with signed Contracts already) of 286 aircraft as of now, it will take them six years or to 2026 to finish them all. I am assuming here that the 48 aircraft per year is both for brand new and upgrade builds, and that they will ramp up their production to maximum in 2020.

There is a pending order of 114 F-16V whose Contracts have yet to be signed, but once those firm up then that will add another two years to the production schedule.

LM of course could somehow increase the capacity of their plant, or maybe just open up another plant especially if even more orders come in. At any rate, if the Philippine Air Force (PAF) is to buy the F-16V, the will need to confirm the delivery schedule with them also.

Su-30SME for the Philippine Air Force?

Jane’s didn’t mention the model of the Su-30 that the Philippine Air Force (PAF) is considering, but flashback to 2016 when the Russian News Agency Tass said that Russia was offering the Su-30SME Flanker-C to South East Asian countries.

So this could be the model the PAF is considering. The Su-30SME is the latest production version of the Su-30 and is based on the Su-30SM used by the Russian Air Force.

The Su-30 can be quite cheap, the cheapest package I found in the internet was when Venezuela bought them for only Usd 42 million each back in 2006. Even when Vietnam bought their Su-30MK2, it was only for Usd 78 million each. In South East Asia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia operate the Su-30.

PAF CG Lt. Gen. Briguez Interview on PAF Virtual TV – 10/24/19

The recent interview of the Commanding General (CG) of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) on the PAF Virtual TV. A must watch episode for all as much as possible.

Most if not all of what he discussed like the Multi-Role Fighter (MRF) program has already been posted in various news publications, but it’s different when you get to hear what he has to say firsthand.

The episode is 49 minutes long though, so I suggest watching it at a faster playback of 1.5x to shorten the duration of the video a bit.
