US Lawmakers now silent about De Lima’s detention

I just noticed that the American Senators particularly the Democrats have suddenly gone silent lately about interfering with the Philippines’ internal affairs like asking for the release of Senator Leila De Lima from Jail.

They were very vocal about it in December 2019 and January 2020, but when President Rodrigo Duterte went out to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States (US), they suddenly became noticeably quiet.

Were these American Lawmakers intimidated by Duterte’s action? Or is this just the silence before the storm as the US is now preparing to sanction specific individuals of the Duterte Government?

I think we will know in the next couple of days, weeks or even months. At any rate, if the US does go into a long hiatus in terms of interfering with the Philippines’ internal affairs, then it seems that Duterte did intimidate them into doing so.

On a related note, De Lima reportedly already sent her list to the US of the people she said “persecuted” her and thus are recommending to be sanctioned by the Americans as per their Magnitzky Act.
