The first-ever civilian, high-powered Hybrid Rocket Project in the Philippines called the “Tala Hybrid Rocket Research Project" is being built by High School Students and their Mentors from St. Cecilia’s College Cebu.
Their goal is to eventually deploy Can Satellites (CanSat) at an altitude of a couple of thousand meters. CanSats are simulations of real Satellites, they are around the size of a Softdrink Can. The Project is supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
The Rocket is fairly big, weighing 15 kg and around 3 m or 10 ft long, almost twice the average height of Humans. It is designed to reach an altitude of 4,000 to 5,000 m, has Global Positioning System (GPS) and dual Parachutes for descent and recovery.
It was supposed to make its first Public launch last March 2020 in Mati, Davao Oriental, but it was cancelled due to a Pressure loss on one of its Fuel Tanks. No new Launch Date has been announced so far.
