Why are the Dutertes pulling a “Good Cop, Bad Cop” Routine on Bong Bong Marcos?

Bong Bong Marcos (BBM) has always been supportive of Rodrigo Duterte’s Presidency, in fact he is one of the Allies who are sticking with him towards the end of his Administration, well at least to this point in time anyway. 

BBM also seems to be going in the direction of continuing most of Duterte’s Policies, like his Infrastructure and Foreign Relations Policies. So everyone thought that Digong would naturally anoint BBM as a possible Successor in the coming 2022 Presidential Election. 

However, that has not happened, it seems that he along with Sara Duterte are doing what could be described as a “Good Cop, Bad Cop” Routine on BBM, with Sara being the “Good Cop”, siding and supporting BBM while Digong himself being the “Bad Cop”, going up directly against BBM. 

‘Recreational Drugs’

As to why they are doing this, I can only speculate as we don’t really exactly know what their Plans are, and neither would they reveal it to the Public. However, here’s what I think: First off, there may be some truth as to BBM taking Recreation Drugs, he clearly was the one Digong was alluding to recently. 

And BBM does fit the profile, he has the Money to do that. Personally I don’t mind, but it is something that can and will be exploited by the Opposition. 

It’s probably even something they were hoping to reveal later in the Presidential Campaign, but Digong already jumped the Gun on them by putting it out in Public, giving more time for the People to “adjust” to the Issue.  

‘Executive Competence’

Another reason maybe is that Digong thinks BBM will be elected as President, but won’t be a competent one. Remember that even if he does get elected as President, if BBM ends up being a mediocre and/or overly corrupt one then he could bring Sara down with him, hurting Sara’s chances of succeeding him in 2028. 

So perhaps Digong doesn’t want Sara to be too identified or too dependent on BBM, he is laying the groundwork for a possible Opposition to BBM in case his Presidency (if he does get elected) doesn’t pan out. That is probably also one reason why Sara is not running under BBM’s Party. 

‘Parting Shot’

I think it will be up to BBM to prove that he will be a good President if he does get elected, Digong being the “Bad Cop” will keep him on his Toes so he can strive to be one. Digong is also hedging in case BBM doesn’t pan out as President, putting Sara in a better position if that really happens.
