Vietnam has now replaced the Philippines as the largest Supplier of Bananas to China for the first eight Months of this Year of 2024 after China increased their importation of Bananas from them by 19.6% while at the same time lessening the importation of Bananas from the Philippines by 39.2%.
Chinese Supermarkets have also stopped buying Bananas from the Philippines and are getting Bananas from Vietnam instead. One Particular Supermarket Chain, AEON Hongkong started this Trend earlier this Year in April of 2024 which the other Supermarkets followed.
AEON has 91 Branches in Hong Kong, and what is particularly frustrating is that it is actually a Japanese Company, who is supposed to be a close Ally of the Philippines. AEON is saying different Reasons as to why they started getting Bananas from Vietnam and stopped getting them from the Philippines, but it is likely that the ongoing Tensions between the Philippines and China has something to do with it.
Remember that while Hong Kong has some Autonomy, it is still a Part of China, it is a "Special Administrative Region (SAR)" of China. And it is not just Bananas, AEON said that they plan to get other Agricultural Products like Mangoes also from Vietnam instead of the Philippines.
Also as I have said in a previous Video that I made, Philippine Banana Organizations acknowledged that the ongoing Territorial Disputes with China in the South China Sea (SCS) has very much to do with China buying less from the Philippines and more from elsewhere like Vietnam.
So again, as I have been saying before, where is the United States (US) and its Allies to absorb this Loss of the Market for Philippine Agricultural Products, then? Especially under this Administration of Bong Bong Marcos (BBM) which has been very subservient to the US.
