Mig-23 on Metalstorm Review: The King of Slashing Attacks – February 2025

Powered by RedCircle

I recently unlocked the Mig-23 Fighter Aircraft on the “Metalstorm” Fighter Plane Video Game, and it seems that they really simulated it in the Game to be almost the same as it is in Real Life, mainly because it is a pretty poor Dogfighter in a Turning Fight.

The real Mig-23 had a very Poor reputation as a Fighter Aircraft, and has a poor, unofficial actual Combat Record, with some estimates it being shot down around four times as much as the number of Aircraft it shot down.

In the Game, its controls are a bit sluggish when you roll, and its ideal speeds where its Turn Rates are the highest are too high, whether the Wings are retracted or not. The Aircraft then has trouble maintaining those ideal Turn Rates during Turns.

The first few Matches I used it, I felt like I got shot down as much as I did the first time I played the Game in the F-5 Freedom Fighter. However, it does have nice Qualities also in that it is very fast with a very quick acceleration, easily reaching and maintaining close to around 1,000 kph or more.

It also is a pretty stable Missile and Gun Platform, and in the Game, its Heat-seeking Missiles are able to lock on quickly on Opponents, around half a second faster than most similar Missiles. Its fast speed allow you to quickly close in on Enemy Aircraft, and helps make the Missiles travel faster also, enabling them to reach their Targets sooner.

Hence the ideal Tactic for me when using this Aircraft is simply to make “Slashing Attacks”, or make “Hit and Run Attacks”. What I do is have the Wings retracted, and then approach the Enemy Aircraft at full Afterburner.

I pick out the Enemy Aircraft as they come into Range of my Missiles, make a few Turns if necessary, and then fire once the Missiles are locked. Once the Aircraft gets past me, instead of turning around immediately to try to chase them down, I just continue forward a bit until the Enemy Icons disappear from the Screen, and then make a Wide Turn, and do it all over again.

I almost never bring the Wings forward in a Game, I just rely mainly on its high speed. With this Tactic, I am able to make a Number of Kills while maintaining a low or acceptable number of “Deaths” in the Game.

The Match I am showing now is one of my best ones where I shot down around five Enemy Aircraft while being shot down only once. The Game credited me with six Kills in this Match though, not sure why is that, I think one of the Aircraft I damaged subsequently crashed on its own, hence the added Kill.

I also recommend that this Aircraft be played on the “Air Superiority” Matches as much as possible because then the Enemy Aircraft are not just going after you, they are also distracted and busy trying to capture or protect the “Control Points”.

Enjoy the Match, I sped up Parts of it to shorten the Video and go thru the uneventful Parts quickly, and only put the Video on Normal Speed during the most Interesting Parts.
