The United States Marine Corps (USMC) Special Operations units are replacing their Browning M2 Heavy Machine Guns (HMG) with much lighter weapons, either the Sig Sauer MG 338 or the General Dynamics (GD) Lightweight Medium Machine Gun (LMMG).
The M2 weighs around 38 kg while the MG 338 and LMMG weigh only 9-10 kg, or around only one fourth the weight of the M2. In fact the MG 338 and LMMG are only about as heavy as the General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG) used by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) chambered in 7.62 x 51 mm caliber round like the M60E6 or the FN MAG.
Switching to the MG 338/LMMG also meant switching to a different ammunition, the .338 Norma Magnum (NM) which has less power and doesn’t have as much range as the .50 cal. Browning Machine Gun (BMG) ammunition, but is still more powerful than the current 7.62 mm round.
The .338NM also is much smaller and lighter than the .50 cal. BMG round, allowing more rounds to be carried for the same weight or volume.
