The United States' (US) State Department has approved the potential sale of AH-1Z Viper and/or AH-64E Apache Attack Helicopters to the Philippines.
The package for the potential Apache sale includes the following:
- 6 units
- Total price of Usd 1.5 billion for 6 units or Usd 250 million each
- 18 General Electric T700-701D Engines
- 15 Honeywell Embedded Global Positioning Systems/Inertial Navigation with Precise Positioning Service
- 200 AGM-114 Hellfire Missiles
- 300 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) Kits
- 200 FIM-92H Stinger Missiles
- 18 M261 rocket Launchers (12 new, 6 spares)
- 18 M299 missile Launchers (12 new, 6 spares)
- 18 Stinger Air-to-Air Launchers
- 12 Stinger Captive Flight Trainers (CFT)
- 6 Stinger Aerial Handling Trainers (AHT)
- 5,000 2.75 inch Rockets
- 80,000 30mm rounds
The package is a big expensive, to illustrate for example, the Jose Rizal class Frigates only cost around Usd 163 million each.
If we lower the number of weapons bought along with the aircraft, then that will drive the price down, but of course it will mean that the Attack Helicopters won’t have as much advanced weapons to use also.
Interesting that compared to the AH-1Z package, the Apaches will be armed with Stinger missiles for Air to Air Defense while the Viper will be armed with AIM-9M Sidewinder missiles.
Based on the price, it seems that these will be brand-new units.
