Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teddy Locsin Jr. got into a Word War with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia recently on the Philippines’ claim on Sabah.
The spat started when Locsin replied to a Tweet by the US Embassy that mentioned Sabah being in Malaysia. Locsin said that Sabah was not in Malaysia.
The Foreign Minister of Malaysia then said Locsin’s Tweet was irresponsible and that he is summoning the Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia on Monday, August 3, 2020 to explain Locsin’s Tweet. As a response, Locsin is also summoning Malaysia’s Ambassador to the Philippines.
I think it is good that Locsin is reminding everyone that there are other Countries we are having Territorial disputes with, especially in the case of Malaysia who is not only contesting our ownership of Sabah but also has been actively supporting the Muslim Secessionist Movements in Mindanao for some time now.
Strangely enough, the supposed Dilawan “Nationalists” like Florin Hilbay, Antonio Carpo and Risa Hontiveros continue to remain silent over the Sabah. The issue started six days ago on July 27, 2020, and now it is already August 2, 2020 and none of these people seemed to have any response in public whatsoever.
If it was “China”, all three would be “China-China-China” since July 27, 2020 right away. So why the silence? Aren’t they supposed to be “Nationalists” where “Sovereignty is non-negotiable?” And suddenly now they are quiet? Is our “Sovereignty” now “negotiable” since it is against Malaysia and not “China”?
Maybe they only want to focus on “China” because that is what the United States (US) want. China is the US’ main rival, and the US seems determined to keep their influence in the Philippines and keep China out.
