The United States (US) Department of Defense (DOD) released a Report to the US Congress recently titled “Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China 2020”, and below are some of its highlights:
* China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is now the largest Navy in the entire world with approximately 350 Ships and Submarines of which over 130 are Major Surface Combatants. In comparison, the US Navy only has approximately 293 Ships as of early 2020;
* China also now has more than 1,250 Ground Launched Ballistic Missiles (GLBM) and Ground Launched Cruise Missiles (GLCM) with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers. The US on the other hand only fields one type of conventional GLBM with a range of 70 to 300 kilometers and has no GLCMs;
* China now has one of the World’s largest advanced, long range Surface to Air Missile (SAM) Systems which includes Russian built S-300 and S-400 Systems and domestically produced SAMs as well.
* China aims to completely modernize its Armed Forces by 2035 and be a World class Military by 2049;
* China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) together with the PLAN Aviation are now the largest Aviation Force in Asia and third largest in the entire World with over 2,500 Total Number of Aircraft of which 2,000 are Combat Aircraft. The PLAAF is also now rapidly catching up to Western Air Forces across a broad range of capabilities and competencies;
* China’s People’s Liberation Army Army (PLAA) is the World’s largest standing Ground Force with approximately 915,000 Active Duty Personnel in Combat Units.
- 4 Nuclear-powered Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBN)
- 6 Nuclear-powered Attack Submarines (SSN)
- 50 Diesel-powered Attack Submarines (SS)
- For a Total of 60 Submarines
