CCG 5205 shining a Laser Dazzler on the BRP Malapascua, Photo by the PCG |
In light of the likely use of a “Laser Dazzler” System by the China Coast Guard (CCG) Vessel Number 5205 recently against the BRP Malapascua (MMRV-4403) of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), it is possible that China is considering becoming more aggressive in the South China Sea (SCS) against Philippine Assets after the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) was expanded.
And I think that will be a Brilliant Play for them, for many Reasons. For one, the EDCA Expansion has given them the excuse to do so. They can always say, “that expansion is a Threat to us as a Country as it allowed the Philippines to be used to encircle us Militarily”.
Second, being more aggressive will show that they are not afraid of the Challenge of the Americans at all, it is a way for them to say, “Bring it on”.
Third, it will force the United States (US) to “Walk the Talk”, if they can. The US is always talking about "Fighting China", and "Helping the Philippines", well now the Opportunity to do it. If they don’t help the Philippines directly immediately, as in NOW in this particular Incident, then they will look like Chickens.
Fourth, it will send a strong Message to the Pro-US Advisers on Foreign Policy of President Bong Bong Marcos (PBBM) that they cannot be easily manipulated around with, contrary to what they have been telling to PBBM.
Fifth is that it will give China the excuse to delay and maybe even cancel altogether most if not all of their Infrastructure and other Projects here in the Philippines, especially if things get more heated.
I think we will see a more aggressive China in the coming Weeks or Months as long as EDCA stays to where it is now, and it could mean an end to the promising and budding relations between China and the Philippines that started under Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (FPRRD).
