A recent Article on "The Manila Times" talked about how the major United States (US) and European Electronics Companies are in fact not pouring Investments into the Philippines but instead to another of our South East Asian (SEA) Neighbors, Malaysia. Here is a Summary of that Article:
* The US Company "Intel Corporation" is investing Usd 7 billion to expand its Plant in Malaysia and increase its Computer Chips Output.
* Another US Company, "Nvidia Corporation" is also investing in Malaysia by putting up a Usd 4.3 billion worth Super Cloud Computing Center to support Businesses related to Artificial Intelligence (AI).
* Note that the total Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) Inflow to the Philippines for the entire Year of 2023 was only Usd 1.8 billion, much, much lower than the single Investments of Intel or Nvidia to Malaysia.
* The German Semiconductor Manufacturer "Infineon Technologies AG" is also expanding its operations in Malaysia to the tune of Usd 7 billion.
* Other US and European Electronics Companies like "Robert Bosch GmbH", "Ericsson", "Texas Instruments Incorporated" and many others are also investing in Malaysia.
* If not Malaysia, the other Choices of US and European Investors are either Vietnam or Thailand, and not the Philippines.
* One main Reason for these Investments into Malaysia is the excellent quality of Education there. The US News and World Report Institution, for example, ranks the "Universiti Malaya" as number 226 in the entire World, and another Malaysian University, the "Universiti Sains Malaya" is ranked number 504. In contrast, one of the best Academic Institutions in the Philippines, the "University of the Philippines (UP)", is only ranked at 1,338th Place in that same List.
* The "Learning Poverty" in the Philippines is reportedly at 91% with low Math, Science, Basic Reading and Comprehension Skills.
Just to add to the above Summary of the Article, Intel did expand here in the Philippines in the early 2000s, but eventually shut down that expansion and now maintains only a small presence here.
Also we can clearly see that the Philippines' siding with the US and Europe has not gotten it major Investments to them from the West, it is in fact Malaysia who insists on staying "Neutral" Politically between the West and China which is reaping a lot of Investments from the West.
Note that the Investments of Intel, Nvidia and Infineon alone to Malaysia is already worth around Usd 18.3 billion compared to the only Usd 1.8 billion in FDI Inflow that the Philippines got for the entire Year of 2023, which if you notice is ten times less.
And that is just from three Western Companies, there are several more of them investing into Malaysia.
